  • Real & Imaginary Places by Elaine Fleck and Ed Bordett

This August, The Market Gallery features artists Elaine Fleck and Ed Bordett. Come join us for our Art By Night opening reception, Friday, August 5, 5:30 to 9 p.m. The artists will discuss their work between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.

Expressing the leisurely feel of the summer season, Fincastle native Bordett's oil landscapes include scenes from rural Virginia, Vermont, and Central Park. Roanoke artist Elaine Fleck creates worlds of natural motifs in complex tapestries of fabric and oil paint. Both artists intrigue with the subtle play of shadow and sun filtered through trees, clouds, and oceans. Come see! Their shows hang from July 24 through August 27.

  • July's Featured Artists: Anne Way Bernard, Nancy Dahlstrom, Steve Mitchell, Kim Lashley-Sutliff and Barbara Norman-Lashley

This July, The Market Gallery features an exciting show of 5 mature artists working in 4 different mediums: painter Anne Way Bernard; printmaker Nancy Dahlstrom; potter Steve Mitchell; and mixed media artists Barbara Norman-Lashley and Kim Lashley Sutliff. Come join us for our Art By Night opening reception, Friday, July 1, 5:30 to 9 p.m. Several of the artists will discuss their work between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.

The common thread among these artists is their profound appreciation of the natural world.
Anne Way Bernard's almost 3-dimensional oil landscapes of the Southwest Virginia countryside include high contrasts, layering, and loose brushwork. Inspired by the hillside landscape around her Botetourt studio, Nancy Dahlstrom experiments with printing techniques, adding pastels and drawing elements to her etchings and mezzotints. The colorful crystalline glazes of Steve Mitchell's porcelain vases, jars and bowls resemble the polished surfaces of cowry and olive shells. Last but not least are the witty wall sculptures of mother-and-daughter artists Barbara Norman-Lashley and Kim Lashley-Sutliff, creating garden motifs from recycled books. The show runs from June 26 through July 23rd.

Donna Essig joined The Market Gallery this spring and her featured work will include
two large scale figurative watercolor paintings titled, "Under the Spell of Venus"
and "Birth of Venus". Both of these works were inspired by the paintings of Sandro
Botticelli. Donna’s watercolors are highly detailed and intensely colored narratives
that include imagery from myth and dreams.

Tracy Budd explains the impetus behind her new layered acrylic work, "Painting is a
language. My main goal when I paint is to identify my feelings about my subject and
apply paint in such a way that makes the viewer also react to it. My decisions with
color, texture, value and composition, what I include or leave out, allows me to
    portray my feelings…Poetry in Paint."

Vera Dickerson’s new work is primarily figurative in subject. Her medium is acrylic
in combination with collage that consists of papers that she has especially
developed and produced with each piece in mind.

The Market Gallery, a regional artists’ cooperative, is open 10 am to 5:30 pm
